Equipment: Propeller transmission in a fishing vessel.

Polytron Metal Treatment Concentrate (MTC)

The Challenge

250 work-hours after the propeller transmission of the vessel was overhauled, its temperature started to rise beyond the maximum permitted temperature. As a result the operation of the vessel had to be stopped, resulting in loss of productivity.

The Polytron Solution

Before taking it apart, at the advice of Polytron distributor in Chile, Polytron MTC was applied , 5% by volume, to the transmission propeller box. 6 work- hours after applying Polytron MTC, the operating temperature of the propeller box went down to normal temperature and remained at this temperature additional 250 work-hours, until it was decided to take it apart and see what caused its overheating before Polytron was added. In this specific case we did not want to stretch our luck and decided to take the box apart after additional 250 work-hours. When we inspected the parts, it was clear to us why the box overheated before MTC was added. Some parts were severely corroded and pitted as a result of penetration of salt water. What amazed us was that in spite of the damage, after MTC was added the temperature went down and the box continued working as if there was no damage. Not only that, there were parts that were lubricated with oil contaminated with salt water and were not damaged. It was clear that MTC protected these parts from salt water.

Looks like that in spite of the corrosion and pitting damage, as soon as MTC was added this wear process stopped and the operating temperature went down.

Customer Feedback

The application of MTC , not only helped to lower the operating temperature and stabilize it, but it was also observed that MTC protected the parts of the transmission box from high workloads and from salt water that contaminated the oil allowing it to operate at least 250 additional work-hours without catastrophic failure. In our estimate the transmission could remain in operation 250 work-hours more, but we decided not the stretch our luck. Now we have decided to use Polytron MTC and expand its use gradually in the fleet equipment and the vessel engines.
